Joan Laage/Kogut Butoh settled in Seattle WA in 1990 after living in Tokyo where she studied with Kazuo and Yoshito Ohno and performed in Yoko Ashikawa’s group Gnome and conducted dissertation research. She is also a longtime student of Atsushi Takenouchi. Known as Kogut (rooster) since living in Krakow 2004-2006, Joan has performed in the Tenri butoh festival and the Acousmatic Festival En Chair et En Son in Paris, in Winterwerft International Theater Festival in Frankfurt and other events in Europe, Asia and New Zealand. She frequently collaborates with Kea Tonetti, Maruska Ronchi, Sylwia Hanff, and Lucie Betz. Known as the NW pioneer (USA), she is featured in Tanya Calamoneri’s recent book Butoh America.
